Creating Inclusive Spaces at MSP: Universal Changing Stations and Sensory Room
in News
Alliiance is committed to designing spaces that ensure accessibility, dignity, and comfort for all. Our latest projects at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) exemplify this commitment.
Universal Changing Stations
To date, three Alliiance-designed Universal Changing Stations are open at MSP Terminal 1, with one at Concourse G finishing design, and two more scheduled for completion in the next two years. The design of these stations goes beyond the building code to provide essential facilities for travelers who require changing tables. Each station features a manually foldable and electronically height-adjustable Pressalit CT 4000 change table, shower wand, trench drain, and floor sink as well as a baby changing table. There is a clear relationship between the location of the changing table, toilet, and hoist system—providing seamless user accessibility. The change table’s adjustable height and upright storage capability ensure a clear and accessible path within the space.
Sensory Room
The new Sensory Room located in Concourse G of Terminal 1 recently completed design and is headed into bidding and construction. The space will be a refuge for neurodivergent travelers and those with sensory processing challenges, providing a calm environment away from the bustling terminal. Extensive research and collaboration with the Autism Society of Minnesota and the Fraser Group informed the design, making sure it meets the diverse needs of its users.
The room is divided into several areas to accommodate different levels of privacy: a foyer with travel information, a central area, a semi-private room, and a private room. The design features sound-dampening acoustic panels, adjustable lighting, and an interactive wall system suitable for all ages and abilities. Inspired by natural elements and sense of place, the room includes custom oak furniture, lily pad sound baffles, lichen-inspired flooring, and images reminiscent of Minnesota’s skies. Seating options include the Cova chair by Davis, which offers a comforting “hug,” and rocker chairs for those who like to fidget. The design process was highly collaborative, with intentional design and material selection to support the needs of all users. This includes incorporating soft, easy-to-clean, and replaceable materials.
These projects at MSP showcase Alliiance’s dedication to inclusive and thoughtful design that allows all travelers to navigate public spaces with dignity and ease. We are proud to support MSP in their mission to become the most accessible airport in the world.
