Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches Major Security Checkpoint Expansion at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport
in News
On November 7, 2024, the Louisville Regional Airport Authority hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to officially launch the Security Checkpoint Expansion project at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). This $45 million initiative marks the most significant update to the Jerry E. Abramson Terminal in over 35 years.
The expansion will add a 30,000-square-foot addition to the terminal’s west side, featuring up to ten screening lanes equipped with cutting-edge security technology and a dedicated breach control exit lane. Designed by Alliiance in partnership with CMTA, the project emphasizes enhancing passenger experience while prioritizing environmental sustainability. Alliiance’s Jonathan Rozenbergs, Michael McClimon, and Andrea Loy, and CMTA’s Bryan Burke attended the event to celebrate this milestone.
This project builds on Alliiance’s ongoing partnership with Louisville International Airport. Phase 2 of the SDF Next Program successfully relocated TSA PreCheck and general screening queuing lanes, improving passenger flow. Phase 3 will significantly expand checkpoint capacity and efficiency, enabling SDF to accommodate growing passenger volumes while improving security processes.
Aligned with SDF’s commitment to green building practices, the new facility will incorporate advanced energy-saving technologies. A prominent glass curtain wall with smart glass will reduce glare and solar heat while preserving clear visibility to the outside. Solar panels on the rooftop will generate clean energy to help power the terminal, enhancing the airport’s sustainable operations. Additionally, specialized ventilation systems will improve indoor air quality by filtering out dust and delivering fresh air to high-traffic areas.
Beyond the Security Checkpoint Expansion, Alliiance continues to collaborate with the Louisville Regional Airport Authority on a range of terminal improvements. Future enhancements include exterior upgrades, improved roadside areas, entry landscaping, new wayfinding signage, and other passenger-focused updates—all part of a cohesive vision plan for the airport’s long-term growth and transformation.
The Security Checkpoint Expansion at SDF exemplifies a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability, setting a new benchmark for regional airports.
